Analysis and Optimisation of CODE Protocols
European Space Agency (ESA) (TE)
1992-1993
This project investigated the performance of TCP/IP over a VSAT LAN-interconnection
system, including successful demonstration of the system with other European
sites. This project was a part of the European Co-operative
Data Environment (CODE) network. Aberdeen carried out a detailed analysis
of the performance of the TCP/IP protocols, including well known application
protocols such as RPC, NFS, X-windows, ftp and telnet. Data from simulation
was supplemented with measurements made over live satellite links using
the CODE VSAT terminals at
Aberdeen University. It has shown that these protocols provide performance
comparable to that observed on most European terrestrial connections operating
at similar speeds, but that optimisation of the protocols is possible by
a careful analysis and that very substantial improvements in performance
may result from proper selection of key parameters.
