Development of a Graphical Tool to Visualise the X.25 Protocol
Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (RSRE)
This project funded by the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (RSRE)
Defford, constructed a graphical protocol analyser using a graphics workstation.
A PC-based tool allowed packets of data to be captured from an active communications
line and stored, together with timing data, onto a disk. The analyser executed
on a SUN workstation and was programmed in the Simula language. It used
the Network Extensible Windowing System (NeWS) to provide a menu-driven
interactive user interface. Using this tool the user displays frame transition
diagrams for the HDLC and X.25 protocols. The tool provides a number of
display formats, allowing the user to browse through large data sets and
zoom into interesting features. All the display code uses the PostScript
language.
